"Men suppose that gods are brought to birth, and have clothes and voice and shape like their own. But if oxens and horses or lions had hands, or could draw and fashion works as men do, horses would make the gods shaped like horses, and lions like lions, making the bodies of the gods resemble their own forms."
-Xenophane

"The hour of departure has arrived, and we go our ways-I to die, and you to live. Which is better, God only knows."
-Socrates

" A tyrant must put on the appearance of uncommon devotion to religion. Subjects are less apprehensive of illegal treatment from a ruler whom they consider god-fearing and pious. On the other hand, they do less easily move against him, believing that he has the gods on his side."
-Aristotle

"We must not believe the many, who say that only free people ought to be educated, but we should rather believe the philosophers who say that only the educated are free."
-Epictetus

"For I do not seek to understand that I may believe, but I believe in order to understand. For this I believe -- that unless I believe, I should not understand."
-St. Anselm
